How A Good DM
Should Be?
Ten golden
rules of the art of game managing :
1 ) Multitasking : Managing a game requires hearing multiple players
at the same time , answering them satisfactorily , observing all the
combat mechanics , holding the control in hand , reading quickly and
commenting on what you read , and doing these simultaneously.
2 ) Improvisation : It means not to get stuck against sudden events
and the linear progress of the game because of the intelligence or
silliness of a player. Not to make the players feel as if they’re
playing in a computer game map , but to make them feel that they are
playing in a living world . It is an indispensable skill to do these
and stay connected to main theme.
3 ) Being Purified Of Personal Rule and Cliches : With protecting a
certain style , avoiding doing the same things in the same way that
players can easily predict saves the game from becoming dull and
also helps keeping the control . If the moves of DM are occasionally
predicted by the players , then it means the players have the
control.
4 ) Being Immune To Favourite Class/Race : The most irritating
moment in the game is when you understand that the race/class or
personality of your character is disliked by DM . DM’s favouring a
class or a race is like the referee’s suportting a side in a
football match.
5 ) Telling Stories : No need to explain : )
6 ) Being The Expert (Optional) : Being the most knowledgeable
person in the game about the game world that is being played in is
also helps to raise authority.
7 ) Leaving Egoism At Home : Not reflecting the personal obsessions
to the game , not overworthing the players that you create than your
real friends , not making the players only extras by controlling the
game alone , not competing against players for nothing , being
without any nerve… This is what distinguishes a master DM and the
ones who think themselves as masters.
8 ) Being Fair and Honest : If you are not , then you can not expect
it from the players.
9 ) Making Suprises : Always creating fictions in fictions is the
biggest pleasure of a DM . It is necessary to keep both the game and
the players active. This can be handled in the same cathegory with
the 3rd topic.
10 ) Constitution : Keeping the fortitude and bladder when the game
passes 8-10 hours and the players are sleepy. Having the superhuman
skills to talk ceaseless and not to get hugry in all those times.
These 10 rules are the cornerstones of the game managing art… At
least I care those while writing or managing a game…

As
writing a good book requires a lot of reading , experience , a great
knowledge in literature and using the language well , managing a
game requires dominating the scenario , rules and having played a
lot of games. Besides , experience is also very important to DMs. No
one can be expected to manage a great game in debut . A DM starts to
overcome the difficulties step by step and creates solutions to
those difficulties as he/she manages games. With this experience he/she
earns , he/she can solve the difficulties and also make the game
more enjoyable.
Apart from that , a DM should know the rules very well . Searching
the books for move that player will do both bores the player and
makes the game boring. Playing a lot of games also grants us the
skill to predict how the players react against the situation. How
the players will react against the situations can be predicted by
DMs.
Briefly , a DM should first know what RPG is and then earn
experience. A good scenario , good players and a wise and
knowledgeable DM mean a great game I suppose.

A good Dm
is a the one who could contribute and puts the game in order. To be
a good Dm , you should be a good player I think. It is very
important to know the rules well and to understand and examine the
player behaviours. I mean you should first be managed , then should
try to manage and at last manage. FRP is the life itself and the one
who knows the rules are always ahead. Good DM is someone who is
always prepared to anything. To know these rules is only possible by
experience. Because of this , you play and get played a lot of games
before you say ‘I am a good DM’ . A good DM should ignore the real
personalities of the players in the game. You should try to think
the players as if you don’t know them and act in order to identify
them. This helps pretty much as it helps to predict what players
will do. A good DM is always fair. To be fair , forgetfullness
should be in minimum level to recall the decisions in order to
execute again . One last thing , a good DM doesn’t condone the
attempts of a player which is trying to control the game. Briefly ,
a good DM doesn’t let himself to be managed.
